About "Birds"

The commercial opens with a breathtaking view at sunrise of the mystic Jawant Thada, the graceful marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jawant Singh II in Jodhpur. A little girl sees her brother packing for a journey. She runs through the village streets of Jodhpur, stopping at a stall to buy birds, to bring good fortune to her brother, who is embarking on a journey. Hoping to buy five birds but only able to afford one, she leaves dejected with her bird. The visiting tourist - Richard Gere - overhears this and after she has left, takes out his Visa card and buys all the birds from the stalls.

As the little girl is about to bid her brother farewell and release her single bird into the air, hundreds of birds suddenly soar into the sky behind her. The commercial concludes on a warm and humorous note, as Richard Gere and the bird sellers look away innocently, disclaiming responsibility.*

This ad is third in line after the one showing Pierce Brosnan whizzing through Bangkok in a tuk-tuk and goddess Catherine Zeta Jones going bananas in the jungle. The first two were funny but I love this new ad, especially for the rustic imagery created in the vibrant bazaars of Jodhpur, with a back drop of the Meherangarh Fort.

Last week, as I was heading to Suntec City with a senior Chinese gentleman, a Singaporean entrepreneur, we happened to see this ad playing on one of those big LCD screens. He looked at me and said “That ad is a lot of BS.”

“Why would you say that?” I asked. My boss and Pooja, a journalist for SVCA, looked up from the back seat as the Chinese gentleman continued.

“Well, I think it epitomizes the Westerner – the White man – as the World’s philanthropist.” He said. I was surprised by his comment mostly because I had failed to see this ad in the light he presented. I think the ad did a great job in reinforcing the idea that VISA is ubiquitous in terms of acceptance. I would have probably enjoyed it more if Amitabh Bachchan had been in Richard Gere’s place.

Pooja spoke up from behind “Indians don’t have the insecurity anymore!” The gentleman didn’t seem convinced and we changed topic as we headed into the car park. It did make sense. Indians I guess are bathing in the glory of “India Shining” and the White man is just another player in this level playing field.

Throughout much of the last 3 centuries Indians saw themselves under the rule of the White men (or women). Nationalized history has vilified them and we have all the reasons to feel wronged. Amir Khan belting the buggers in Lagaan did seem to put things right. But I don’t know if it’s my whetted confidence or indifference that didn’t make me see the other perspective.

But what made this gentleman insecure? I thought Singaporeans loved and aped the West. What do the younger generations feel? Does the ad risk falling in disfavor of most Asians?

I failed to see what your friend commented as well. I love the ads, coz of the indian cultural elements in there, not quite noticing about the westerners'. Perhaps we could see it in another way: the fact of how the settings of ad-shooting is chosen depicts world recognition of the East :)

This is what my friend Gail had to say about it

think mostly its because u guys do not associate yourselves with the indians portrayed in the ad.
u're not a poor village girl, not the ass kissing concierge/guide, nor the bird sellers who accept visa (yeah, right)
thus you do not feel that euro/UScentric messages in the ad.
most of you are educated working proffesionals.

you could say that if anyone should take offence its because they're not secure in their own national/cultural identity. but yeah if they're so secure why use a white guy to sell a brand. use local stars lah. use your own Shah ru khan lah. make an ad with Shah ru khan shopping in Alanta, or any of the proverty states lah.
Why should Richard Gere be in it? If this ad is shown in asia, should they not use asian stars?
a while back they did one with Zhang ziyi (a chinese turned famous in hollywood actress) and all you could see was her one line and then she started kicking and making a mess out of the whole restaurant. sublimal msg: Asian = violent, Ang mo = rich, generous, debonair ...etc

why is there always one lone black/hispanic character in most american TV/ Movie. and they'll either die within 15 mins. or stay alive to be POLITICALLY CORRECT. how come there is always only one black couple in the amazing race / survivor?

the message is clear: not one single indian in that ad had a visa card, even the bird sellers looked so ridiculously happy to receive the card. maybe they fucked richard gere over by overcharging him or something but hey, he's so fucking rich (and by the he I mean white rich american male) and he doesn't care if the bird seller earned 10,000 more rupees off him. Did they look noble? no. did they look generous? no Did they look intelligent and educated with subtle nuances? hell no. at the end of the day, the white guy gets off looking so "generous, white and shinning".

well, its alright if u want to believe your confident and choose to ignore subtexts and all that. just let the americans fuck you guys over sublimally loh.

but hey, its not the fault of u guys, it your own ppl fucking u up. last time it was: don't let the white guy come over and exploit us. now it, lets exploit our own ppl. who cares if we(rich asian media honchos) send a msg like that to the masses, we're making money.

and this what I had to say abt it...

well the fact tt u feel u should have had an indian star in the ad instead or some indian in US, contradicts your very point about typecasting.

the ad is not abt a white guy flashing his visa card, but abt a white guy alien to the indian culture and feels for the indian gal trying to bid luck and farewell to her bro by freeign a bird.. and he used VISA as a convenient medium to avoid the gal from being disappointed
its a simple ad.... the fact tt u think of it in terms of a white guy in asia land .... reiterates your very point of typecasting - white guy as rich land conquerors exploiting asian lands....

well if i had aishwarya rai showing off her kunfu skills or to the fact even sarah michelle gellar, it would not have been as convincing as zhang ziyi

and that is advertising.... you are reaching out to the viewers, you are making a sales pitch
not a political propaganda

The other thing to note here is they have used Richard Gere. He is infact a practicing Buddhist and understands eastern culture pretty well. I believe that potraying him in an ad with an Asian setting was spot on. As for using Asian stars in international ads its already happening, Aishwarya Rai is one of the international faces of Loreal. Shahrukh khan if i am not wrong is the brand ambassador of Tagheuur watches and many more. The important thing is not to get jignostic, otherwise we can start looking for subtexts and hidden meanings in everything.
